ส่วนชื่อ มหาชัย นั้นมีที่มาในรัชสมัยสมเด็จพระสรรเพชญที่ 9 ที่ได้ทรงโปรดให้ขุดคลองสายตรงจากเมืองธนบุรีไปออกปากน้ำเมืองสาครบุรี เพื่อแทนที่คลองโคกขามที่มีลักษณะคดเคี้ยว เมื่อการขุดคลองเสร็จสิ้น พระองค์ได้พระราชทานชื่อว่า คลองมหาชัย และบริเวณฝั่งซ้ายของปากคลองแห่งนี้ ก็ได้มีชุมชนขนาดใหญ่เกิดขึ้น โดยชาวบ้านเรียกกันติดปากว่า มหาชัย มาจนถึงทุกวันนี้
